A beautiful chunk of English ash, turned and treated with the Japanese yakisugi technique, then turned again to finish with the contrasting natural wood.
After turning and sanding, I char the outer with a blow torch, working gradually to achieve an even finish. The soot created in this process is then brushed out of the grain and I take the flame back to the surface to ensure a solid finish. Excess soot is then brushed away again before finally coating with layers of finishing oil, sanding with fine sandpaper in between coats to achieve a tactile, textured finish. The piece is then turned for a final time, creating the inside of the bowl and leaving a natural wood finish for contrast.
